Australia on Wednesday said it wanted to bring its military involvement in Afghanistan to a quick end, despite U.S. and NATO calls for more troops to shore up the campaign against a resurgent Taliban.

Aiming to break through congressional opposition to White House plans to shutter the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a group of retired generals and war veterans have launched a national campaign to rally support for closing the prison.
